When we struggle in yoga poses, smiling seems to be a very remote possibility. Strangely enough, the effort in a pose enhances your ability to smile. Poses increase blood circulation to the brain, which enhances mood. Yoga also increases levels of the neurotransmitter, gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), which uplifts your mood. So next time you get hit by the blues…run for a yoga class.
After your yoga practice, when you are lying down, imagine a smile, a little happy face generating from your heart. Then let those happy faces spread…let them spread to your stomach, then quadriceps, shins, feet, toes…then run it back to the heart, arms, hands, fingers…again back to heart then neck, then your head, eyes, nose and finally the lips. A smiley face coming out of the lips is the most heartfelt smile and it will last for a long time.
When the smile starts to dwindle, get back to yoga again.
